Reducing Risk With The Colon Cancer Diet

You may have seen on other sections of this website how your lifestyle affects your chances of getting cancer. By eating certain foods and keeping a healthy lifestyle you can reduce the risk of becoming victim to some forms of cancer. It is important to note that cancer is not just about lifestyle. There are some factors we can do nothing about and cancer is not always avoidable. Some forms of cancer are hereditary and other types of cancer will appear no matter what we do. I had testicular caner a while ago, (you can see my story on this website). There was very little I could do about this, and it was not hereditary, I was simply unlucky.

In this article we will be looking at the Colon cancer diet. By eating healthily and taking heed of the following advice you will not only reduce the risk of colon cancer, but you will also reduce the risk of many other illnesses. You will feel healthy and notice quickly, how you have more energy.

First of all you should really try and avoid toxins. Toxins are defined as poisons that are found in living systems. In this case, the human body. Toxins are an important factor not only in the Colon cancer diet but everyday life. They are poisons and chemicals that are put into all sorts of products that we use all the time. There are some toxins that are virtually impossible to avoid as they are found in so many everyday items. Many household cleaners, and personal hygiene products contain toxins which can be inhaled or absorbed into our skin and weaken our immune system. As we use hundreds of products daily, this is perhaps one of the reasons that there seem to be more people now affected by cancer than ever before.

Of course it is not possible to live a normal life and avoid all of these products but we can make a difference with the food we consume. The Colon cancer diet is all about ditching unhealthy foods that are known to cause all sorts of health problems and replacing them with foods that are known to be beneficial to health. First of all you should try and avoid, (or at least cut down on) foods that we all know are bad for us. Junk food is with out a doubt the first place to start. Burgers, Pizza, Chips, Crisps etc are all bad for us. They are fine as a treat now and again, but not in the quantities that many people now consume them. You may have seen a TV broadcast stating that by eating 2 packet of crisps a day you would in effect have consumed a whole 4 litre bottle of fat in just one year! Other foods to avoid are hydrogenated fats (such as margarine), Refined Salt (i.e. table salt), Chlorinated Water, Hard cheeses, Fried and grilled foods, Alcohol, fizzy soft drinks, and of course foods containing unhealthy sugars or saturated fat.

As already stated, the whole point of the Colon cancer diet, is to eat foods that are likely to reduce the risk of getting Colon cancer. We have already looked at the foods we shouldn't be eating, so now let's look at some healthy foods we should consuming to minimise cancer risk.

One common misconception is that fat is bad. Although, (as mentioned above) some fat is bad for you, there are fats that our bodies need and may even have some anti-cancer properties. Flaxseed, canola, soybean, and pumpkin seed oil are all high in Omega 3 and are fats that we should be consuming. Olive oil is high in monounsaturated fat, which is also very good for the system. If you are unsure and don't want to spend hours researching, then a general rule of thumb is to go for vegetable fats instead of animal fats.

Another important feature in the Colon cancer diet is fibre. It is estimated that 3 out of 5 people don't eat enough fibre and this is one factor that is believed to lead to colorectal cancer. Fibre helps to move carcinogens through the system faster, which reduces the amount of time they are in the body. One brilliant example of a food to eat here is the common apple. We've all heard the saying "an apple a day keeps the doctor away". Well, there is more truth to this than you may believe. As well as having fibre in the skin, apples contain what are known as short chain fatty acids. These help to prevent the growth of harmful bacteria. On top of this apples help to nourish the cells in the wall of the intestine. The healthier your intestine is, the more resistant it will be to colorectal cancer.

Raw fruit and vegetables are great not only for the Colon cancer diet but for all cancer prevention and eating a mixture at the same time, (i.e. a salad) is even better than eating one portion individually. Seafood is considered a good way to replace meat, especially red- meat as it is far more healthy and is considered to be yet another cancer preventing food.

So as you can see from this colon cancer diet article, we can't stop all forms of cancer but by being sensible with our food, taking regular exercise, not becoming overweight, and also by reducing stress, we can reduce the risk of not only colon cancer, but also many other forms at the same time.
